چکیده

xxxviiiABSTRACT Global climate change is leading to the rise of ocean temperatures and is triggering masscoral bleaching events on reefs around the world. This involves the expulsion of thesymbiotic dinoflagellate algae, known as zooxanthellae, from the coral host. Coralbleaching is believed to occur as a result of damage to the photosynthetic apparatus ofthese symbionts, although the specific site of initial impact is yet to be conclusivelyresolved. This thesis examined a number of sites within the light reactions ofphotosynthesis and evaluated the efficiency of photoprotective heat dissipating pathways.Upon expulsion, the capacity for long-term survivorship of expelled zooxanthellae in thewater column was also assessed. A reduction in photosystem II (PSII) photochemical efficiency during exposure toelevated temperature and high light (bleaching conditions) was found to be highlydependent upon the increase in abundance of QB non-reducing PSII centres (inactive PSIIcentres), indicating damage to the site of the secondary electron acceptor,QB, resulting ina limited capacity for its reduction. Therefore, this reduced the rate of the reoxidation ofthe primary electron acceptor, QA. Fast induction curve (FIC) analysis of the rise fromminimum fluorescence to maximum fluorescence revealed a lower amplitude in the J stepalong this curve, which was consistent with a reduction in the rate of QAreoxidation. This photoinhibition of PSII was found to occur once the effectiveness of excess energydissipation through energy-dependent quenching and state-transition quenching wasexceeded, suggesting that these mechanisms were incapable of preventing photodamage.

Effects of Light, Food Availability and Temperature Stress on the Function of Photosystem II and Photosystem I of Coral Symbionts

BACKGROUND Reef corals are heterotrophic coelenterates that achieve high productivity through their photosynthetic dinoflagellate symbionts. Excessive seawater temperature destabilises this symbiosis and causes corals to "bleach," lowering their photosynthetic capacity. Bleaching poses a serious threat to the persistence of coral reefs on a global scale. Despite expanding research on the causes...

The role of symbiotic dinoflagellates in the temperature-induced bleaching response of the subtropical sea anemone Aiptasia pallida.

Coral bleaching involves the loss of symbiotic dinoflagellates (zooxanthellae) from reef corals and other cnidarians and may be a stress response of the host, algae or both. To determine the role of zooxanthellae in the bleaching process, aposymbiotic sea anemones from Bermuda (Aiptasia pallida) were infected with symbionts from other sea anemones (Aiptasia pallida from Florida, Bartholomea ann...

Photosynthetic responses of the coral Montipora digitata to cold temperature stress

Coral bleaching events have become more frequent and widespread, largely due to elevated sea surface temperatures. Global climate change could lead to increased variability of sea surface temperatures, through influences on climate systems, e.g. El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Field observations in 1999, following a strong ENSO, revealed that corals bleached in winter after unusually cold ...

Spatial variation of symbiotic Dinoflagellates on coral reefs of the northern Persian Gulf

Density, mitotic index, Chlorophyll-a content and cell size of symbiotic dinoflagellates of dominant reef-building corals were measured at two different depths in Kish Island and from one depth of Larak Island in the Persian Gulf. The higher densities of symbionts were found in shallow waters of Kish Island. However, ANOVA analyses of the mitotic index yielded mixed results. The cell sizes of s...

Zooxanthellae ultrastructure affected in bleached corals

Most reef-building corals are hermatypic: they harbour endosymbiotic algae of the dinoflagellates group (generally called zooxanthellae, genus Symbiodinium), within vacuoles in the gastroderm cells. Bleaching, loss of colour due to loss of these symbiotic algae and/or their photosynthetic pigments, on a large scale, appears to increase by intensity and geographic extent, certainly related to in...
